Oct. 24, 2008Final StatsPhoto GalleryBERKELEY, Calif. - The Arizona State women's soccer team nearly pulled off its second consecutive win over a ranked opponent before settling for a 2-2 tie with the No. 22 California Golden Bears on Friday afternoon.The Sun Devils (7-4-4, 1-2-1 Pac-10) took a 2-0 lead in the first half and carried that lead into the final 15 minutes of the contest before a pair of late goals by Cal (9-5-1, 2-2-1 Pac-10) forced the game into overtime where neither team was able to break through in either of the extra 10-minute sessions."I can't emphasize enough that we were the underdogs again today," said ASU head coach Kevin Boyd. "We don't have [depth because of injuries]. We are doing everything we can to try and get games."We got two goals completely against the run of play in the first half. Our strategy in the second half was not to expose ourselves. We were going to defend and try and keep them out. We had an uncharacteristic error and they got a goal and had the momentum. All they needed after that was one more to tie and they got it. The one they got was a good one in that it hit our post and went in. It was a great shot."The Sun Devils struck first in the ninth minute when junior midfielder Carly Kallas' shot from 35 yards out got over the outstretched arms of Cal goalie Gina Pellegrini to give ASU a 1- 0 lead."Carly had never scored a goal with her feet in the college game until today," said Boyd. "We had been thinking she would all year long because she has been cracking these long shots and today she got a nice one and buried it from distance."ASU was able to extend its lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute when sophomore midfielder Erin Seto found teammate Karin Volpe breaking toward the goal in between a pair of Cal defenders. Volpe took the pass and placed her shot into the lower corner of the net for the goal.In the second half the Golden Bears continually attacked the Sun Devils, looking for a score that would get them back into the game. They would finally get it in the 76th minute of play when freshman forward Katie Benz' shot was unable to be controlled by Sun Devil goalkeeper Briana Silvestri and crossed the goal line to cut ASU's lead in half.The Golden Bears were able to get the equalizer a little more than four minutes later when senior Nikki Schrey had a shot bounce off the post and into the net.Silvestri would rebound to make three saves in the two overtime periods to help the Sun Devils preserve a tie.The Sun Devils had nine players play all 110 minutes on Friday.
